7 Forgotten Games in Starship Troopers franchise

Hi all! A new strategy for Star Troops is coming up soon, which means that there is a good reason to tell about little -known video games on this franchise. Almost everyone knows about the shooter of 2005 from Destineer, so it will not be in this material. Actually, like 2000 strategies from Microprose Software, which I devoted a separate article.

The very first video game Starship Troopers

I will start, perhaps, from the earliest release coming to 1982. This work belongs to Leo Kristophyson, who has collected science fiction books from school and intensely delved into the study of the software code. He became famous when he wrote the very first animated game for the TRS-80 computer, and then came up with a way to play sound on this device.

Inspired by the history of Robert Heinlin, Leo created Klendathu for the same TRS-80. Since the first film will be released only 16 years later from the release of this game, the spider -shaped design of beetles was more like an original description from the book.

The player’s character, equipped with an ultramodern force suit and a powerful flamethrower, descends from orbit to the native planet of beetles, where it is necessary to destroy as many enemies as possible. In addition to the expiring timer, the ammunition and strength of power armor will be spent, and the latter decreases both in the attacks of beetles and when repeated landing from the ship.

The more enemies are defeated, the higher the score. Plus, the final result affects how many ammunition remains, and what damage is suffered. If here everything is as well as possible, then the characters are raised in the rank (private, corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, major, colonel and general).

In the game, the surface of the planet is a 2D field from rectangular cells. The detachments of beetles, which are already three types, are moving on them every now and then. Green workers simply run and do not inflict damage. Among them are soldiers who are at least the same color and species, but stop to take a shot. Red Units are the queen, and several representatives may at once per detachment.

If the player wants to accumulate as many glasses as possible, then it is precisely the soldiers and the queens who should be seen, and the workers are passing by themselves, so as not to spend limited resources on their destruction. For clarity: 5,000 points are given for red units, 500 for warriors, and only 50 units for the mass.

Although the game was quite unusual, she didn’t won great glory, which is why they very rarely remember her even when talking about the very first game on Starship Troopers.

Mechwarrior, but with bugs

The next game never saw https://noverificationcasinos.co.uk/no-kyc-casinos/ the light, but it was intended for the PlayStation console. Spectrum Holobyte company October 11, 1996. I concluded an agreement with Sony Signatures Film and Television Licensing on the development of four multimedia games based on the future film Starship Troopers.

At the same time, the game was guided by the book source. For example, the player was supposed to control powerful power armor, which they could not show in the film. The gameplay itself was supposed to be like Mechwarrior games, and the number of bugs wanted to make just huge. At first the character was supposed to grow in rank during the execution of a number of missions. Then strategic components were included, and a small detachment was allocated under the control of the player.

The concept seemed very good, but what led to cancel? In December 1993, Microprose Software was purchased by Spectrum Holobyte. As approved in various interviews, the first company did not have money, but there were many ideas for various games, and Spectrum Holobyte had the exact opposite situation. And although everything looked smooth, breakthrough projects were issued, such as X-Com: Ufo Defense of 1994, the financial situation was still not normalized.

The company’s management could not cope with the management, various licenses were bought, but the games were not released on them. This situation led to the fact that in 1998, Spectrum Holobyte was redeemed by Hasbro Interactive, which decided to cancel various protracted projects, including Starship Troopers.

To stay in the "skin" of the beetle

However, what did not work out for some, the latter happened. In the same 1998, on September 24, the release received a multi -user space strategy called Starship Troopers: Battlespace. Mythic Entertainment was responsible for the development, which also entered into a contract with Sony Online Entertainment for the release of a game of this universe of the same name.

Players had to take one of two sides: beetles or federation. A peculiar campaign and quick matches at one of five areas were available for passage. At the first three, the side that captured all the planets won, the fourth needed to destroy the four enemy bases, and on the fifth the team that shot down 50 ships won.

Both factions could choose for the flight of any of the five classes of ships: light, medium, heavy, fighter and landing. Moreover, well -coordinated work in the team was required. For example, while one planted a soldier from a friendly planet to the enemy, the comrades had to provide cover in every phase of the battle.

The ships could be repaired, re -warned, joined with the bases on which the statistics of the best pilots were stored. The more glasses there were, the higher the title in the table. In addition to this, players could form teams or guilds.

Despite the warm welcome from fans, the number of players was not very large. Over time, the support of the game stopped, and its servers were disconnected in 2001. It is quite interesting that even now part of the fan community would like to return to this game, but about any Rome Starship Troopers: Battlespace have never been kept talking.

Johnny Rico in his pocket

Well, where without mobile gaming in the good old Java format. In 2007, the light saw Starship Troopers: Rouchnecks. The game was a classic 2D-player with a top view. John Rico, who should destroy Zhukov and save the wounded comrades, was issued under the department. Occasionally, it was possible to rule the airborne ship, simultaneously dropping termite bombs on Roy Zhukov.

The latter here really is a lot. There are ordinary soldiers-soldiers, with wings, spewing fire and brainwalk, which compared to the film is too brilliant and independent. Some of the beetles were even drawn half -sticking out of the ground, as if they crawl out of their Nor.

It would seem that the arsenal against them is impressive: a machine gun, flamethrower, mines, turrets, but there are some problems with the implementation. The character cannot move and at the same time shoot, which often leads to an unsuccessful situation, when the bullets simply do not reach the desired corner. Ammunition right back. Although additional clips and first -aid kits are located at the levels, it is better to use them only in extreme cases.

The fact is that the selected ammunition automatically replaces the already used, and if there were already 100 rounds in the clip, then they will simply disappear when 200 new ones are taken. Because of this, the dynamics of the first levels by the middle of the game is completely lost when you need to run up and move away from the turrets for luring enemies, because this type of gun has endlessly. In general, the game is evaluated by three minus. She can have fun for a while, but is also forgotten quite quickly.

Apple remake

In 2012, the franchise looked at the mobile market again. Starship Troopers: Invasion – Mobile Infantry became an exclusive for Apple and served as a prequel to the animated film "Star Troops: Invasion". Its uniqueness is that the developers decided to combine the Runner genre with a third -person shooter.

Before the fight with beetles, you need to run along the corridors, collecting various tokens and objects. In a certain room, the character will stop and hide behind the shelter, because of which you need to carry out aimed shooting at the beetles. Ammunition here is also not endless, so you should shoot exactly at the target. Comrades or beetles, whose molestation is under the control of a friendly psionic, offer rare help.

Before the start of the game, the character’s floor is selected and the primary and secondary weapons are tuned. For selected tokens offer to buy various amplifiers that simplify the battles.

There is nothing more in the game than you can boast. The graphics are pleasant and even beautiful in some places, but the gameplay is very monotonous. Beetles explode like balloons, from the first shot, and the sound of guns often disappears in the middle of shooting. It is a pity that they decided to save money and made a shooter only for a mobile platform.

And a few more words

And since I painted all the video games, then it is worth remembering the other two representatives. In 2016, Starship Troopers was published to Stern Pinball Arcad. True, there is absolutely nothing unusual here. But what exactly might like is the very first table game Starship Troopers 1976 transferred to TableTop Simulator. Moreover, there is both a standard version and expanded, where the figures are created in 3D format. Both have 3 fractions; Federation, beetles and humanoids nicknamed "skinny". The latter could be seen in the animated series RouchNecs: Starship Troopers Chronicles. Are extraterrestrial creatures that were in the past in alliance with beetles, but then went over to the side of the federation.
